Das heutige Kröpeliner Tor gilt als das schönste erhaltene Baudenkmal der Gotik in Rostock. Mit seinem Bau begann man im 13. Jahrhundert, als auch die Stadtmauer um die sich 1265 vereinenden drei Teilstädte errichtet wurde. Die erste Erwähnung findet sich in Akten der Jahre 1260/1276 als „valvaCrapelyn".

It originally consisted of 2 floors and was extended to its current height of 54 meters in the 15th century. Since May 2005, the Rostock History Workshop has been using the gate for exhibitions.
